“I just want to express my appreciation for Sam’s ability and dedication in teaching me the fundamentals of drumming. Although I am undoubtedly his oldest student at 60 years old, it gives me great pleasure to continue learning by playing the music I love. As one gets older it is important to keep training the brain - use it or lose it they say! The satisfaction that comes from finally “busting through” the brain’s and body’s natural aversion to foreign, physical actions such as unnatural syncopated rhythms and fills is really quite special.
It is always easy to want to just go down and bang on the kit, but his consistent, knowledgeable lessons (not to mention periodic displays of Berklee brilliance for my inspiration) keep me moving forward. That is very important since it is easy to get into ruts and end up playing the same thing all the time. Also his ability to pick out exactly what the drummer is playing in my favorite songs and demonstrate it almost instantly attests to his own solid foundation and abilities.”
